President Obama puts ends to his predecessor’s limits on using federal dollars for embryonic stem cell research. The order will increase research into possible cures for a wide array of diseases, from diabetes to paralysis.
One big supporter of the move is Heather Lowry of California. She can’t remember a time when she didn’t rely on insulin injections to control her type one diabetes. Lowry hopes federally funded embryonic stem research will one day free her of daily injections, however controversial.
Embryonic stem research involves destroying embryos often left over from fertility treatments. Opponents say that’s destroying a human life, but supporters argue it opens doors into the development of treatments for diseases like diabetes.
President Obama calls his decision a “difficult and delicate balance.” He says the order comes with strict guidelines and will *not* open the door to human cloning — something he calls “profoundly wrong.”
