The two suspects arrested Monday following a drive-by shooting in Edinburg faced criminal charges this afternoon. Police say a heated argument between rival gang members is what prompted the shooting.

19-year-old Luis Martin Uvalle and 22-year-old Alexis Nazareth Mendez were arraigned in an Edinburg courtroom this afternoon for their alleged participation in a drive-by shooting on Saltillo Street Monday morning.

Police tell FOX 2 NEWS, Mendez pulled out a 38 caliber handgun at the victim and fired several rounds. When police arrived at the scene of the shooting around 11:30am Monday, Mendez and Uvalle had fled the location and engaged in a high speed chase with Edinburg police officers and Hidalgo County Sheriff Deputies.

Uvalle was identified as the driver of the tan colored Jeep Liberty. Police recovered the vehicle at his home on Alonzo Street and placed both Uvalle and Mendez in custody.

Mendez and Uvalle were identified as active members of the Valluco Gang. Authorities said the City of Edinburg has a fair share of gang related activity. Mendez was issued a $100,000 bond. Uvalle was issued $155,000 total in bonds.

They’ve both been transported to the Hidalgo County Detention Center.
