The city of Edcouch is trying to determine why 43 percent of their water isn’t accounted for on a monthly basis. One by one each water hydrant located within the Edcouch city limits will be inspected within the next two weeks. Miguel rodriguez, will be using a professional subsurface leak detector to make sure each hydrant is in full compliance with the standards. But this is only part of the work being conducted by city officials in Edcouch to determine where 43 percent of their treated water is going unexplainably. Up to now, the water hydrants seem to be fine. However, Edcouch officials and residents seem to have a much bigger problem in their hands faulty water meters. But according to rodriguez, this problem can easily be determined if residents conduct a water flow test in their home. If your meter is more than 10 years old, there’s a big chance you might have to get a new one. Replacing more than 900 will cost the city time and tax payer money. Officials say the main goal behind this inspection of the city’s water system is to find a solution that might help lower their resident’s utility bills. Residents in this small city who ask why they continue to have the highest utility rates in the area will soon have an answer to that million-dollar question. The equipment the city of edcouch is using to conduct these tests is being provided at no cost to the city or it’s residents by the texas water development board. Had it been purchased, the city would have invested over 250 thousand dollars.
