Edcouch Elsa Lay-offs No More

People working for the Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District can breathe a little easier; at least for one year. There will be no need for another round of job cuts comparable to the ones in December. Those cuts have eliminated more than 20% of the school district’s workforce and have helped balance the 2008-2009 budget saving the district nearly 4.3 million dollars. But the financial nightmare is far from over. The district still owes more than $5 million to its various creditors. School officials say that other cuts will be done through not renewing certain contracts. They also admonish that, although the budget is balanced, sooner or later the district must still find the money to pay off what they owe.
