Eating Too Fast Can Affect Your Health

November 5, 2009 Health   Print Print   Email this Article Email this Article   No Comments

In a rush at lunch? New research explains why you should slow down while you eat.
When you don’t take time to fully swallow each bite before taking the next that’s when you know you may be eating too fast and that could be detrimental to your health. Researchers out of Laiko general hospital in Greece say eating too fast limits the body from releasing hormones in the gut that tell you when you’re full. That, they say, leads to over eating. Researchers had volunteers eat ice cream at different rates while they measured things like hormones, glucose, and insulin. They found those who took a half hour to finish the ice cream had higher concentrations of the filling hormones. They also reported feeling fuller than those who ate the same amount, but faster. The study appears in the “journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism.”
