Eating Healthy on a Budget
In this economy everyone is looking to save a few dollars, so, we asked nutritionist Tanya Zuckerbrot to help us compile a list of the top health foods under three bucks.
“So if you’re looking to save a few dollars you wanna head straight for the freezer aisle.”
Because fruits and veggies are flash frozen at the peak of ripeness, they often contain more vitamins and nutrients than their fresh counterparts, and the best part, you can get a box of veggies for just under a buck
“First of all, a can of beans, you’re talking 99 cents. Beans are filled with fiber, protein, and b-vitamins, and they’re really easy to add into salads or soups.”
And to go with your beans, brown rice! For just under $3-dollars, you can buy a bag of instant brown rice, which contains many vitamins and nutrients. Another cheap powerful food — eggs!
“Now eggs are really high in nutrients such as protein, and also contains something called choline, which is important for brain function
Also – don’t be afraid of store brands, check out this healthy bag of cereal for under two dollars!!!
Rounding out the list:
– Lean ground turkey and chicken
– Canned salmon
– and popcorn.
“It’s high in fiber, contains no fat unlike greasy potato chips, and popcorn actually helps to release seratonin in your brain, which calms you and soothes you and can help you fall asleep. So this makes a great night, late night snack.”
And just think, you might just get a better night’s sleep after saving all that money at the grocery store!
