New research suggests young women involved in sports and exercise could be more likely to develop an eating disorder.
A study by the university of denver surveyed nearly three-hundred female undergrads at a southeastern college.
The survey revealed young women taking part in competitive sports and exercise had higher rates of behavior leading to an eating disorder — compared to young women taking part in little or no exercise.
Researchers believe these attitudes are related to the anxiety that comes with competing in a sport.
Experts encourage coaches and trainers to be on the lookout for signs of an eating disorder among their female athletes.
The study can be found in the “international journal of eating disorders.”
