A new study says babies born four to six weeks early have triple the risk of developing cerebral palsy.
So-called late preterm babies are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with developmental delays or mental retardation. Researchers with the march of dimes tracked more than one-141,000 children born at thirty weeks gestation or later.
According to the study, the late pre-term babies were three-point-four times as likely to develop cerebral palsy as full-term babies. They also were about twenty-five percent more likely to develop learning, speech and other developmental delays.
Cerebral palsy refers to a group of disorders that affect a child’s ability to coordinate body movements. Symptoms include lack of muscle coordination, stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes, walking problems, drooling and tremors.
