DPS officials have issued a warning to all Texas spring breakers not to travel into border cities in Mexico due to the increase in Mexican drug cartel related violence

During the spring break season, dps will have extra patrols looking out for people who are driving under the influence of alcohol, seat belt violators, and speeders, however, state officials urge parents not to let their children travel to border cities because their safety cannot be guaranteed.

The warning comes after an increase of gun battles between rival drug cartels in the state of Tamaulipas.

acknowledging a difficult economic climate, the university of texas system board of regents approved tuition and fee increases for the next two academic years.

The board approved a 3.95 percent tuition increase and academic fee increases, totaling about $280 more per academic year for full-time resident undergraduate students at ut systems nine academic institutions.

Currently, for 15 credits a year, students pay $2,764, in 2011 they will pay $ 2,904, and in 2012 15 credits will casot $3,044. Juan gonzalez, assitant vice president for business affairs at utpa tells fox2 the increase is a normal process done by the board of regents.

Despite the increases, tuition and fees at utpa and university of texas at brownsville remain the lowest in the ut system and among the lowest at state institutions of higher learning.
