Painkillers lead to deafness
Some popular painkillers might be damaging your hearing too.

A new report out of Brigham and Women’s hospital says the link involves popping a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug at least twice a week. These include some medicine cabinet staples… Like aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen. For example, men under fifty in the study who regularly took aspirin were at double the risk of hearing loss compared to men who didn’t take them. For those who took ibuprofen, the risk was two-thirds higher…

And those who popped aspirin were one third more likely. Researchers say since the painkillers are so common, taking them for ten years would work out to an overall ten percent increased risk for the entire population.

The study appears in the American Journal of Medicine.

Researchers say it shows even though the painkillers are available without a prescription, it’s still important to know they have potential side effects.
