Disaster Areas of Hidalgo County
August 20, 2008 | News
Local authorities are doing what they can to help valley residents get aid for the 100 additional homes that have been damaged due to the recent flooding.
Many homes have been inundated with water sending many families to shelters all across the valley. Starr County has seen the worst of flooding and damages, this on top of the rain dolly brought almost a month ago. About 1400 homes have been damaged in Starr County alone. Several shelters have opened to help those who have no place to go, including a Red Cross shelter at the Newman catholic ministries building.
Emergency management coordinator, Tony Pena, said their efforts to pump out the water from hurricane dolly were essentially erased because of the flooding. Neighborhoods around tower and Owassa roads, Alberta road, and Holmes road near mile 17 and a half.
Pena says that they have sent pumping crews from McAllen, Mission, and other areas of Hidalgo County to the effected neighborhoods.
Residents are thankful that the rains have let up and the water is beginning to recede. Weather or not the good fortune will continue, is up to Mother Nature.
Remember the Newman catholic ministries building is open as a shelter, they closed at nine this evening but will be open tomorrow to help anyone in need
