The 357th state district court asked for more time, because jurors must carefully decide to give mar 5 to 99 years in prison or a life sentence.
Mar pled guilty on Monday to attempted capital murder when he shot Harlingen police officer Carlos Diaz during a traffic stop at the intersection of F Street and Buchanan Avenue.
Mar fired at the officer 10 times, and four of those bullets struck him on the head, arm, shoulder, and hand.
This morning, the state heard testimony from the defendant’s mother, Virginia Mar, who said that her son had a rough childhood. According to Virginia, her husband was an alcoholic and a very abusive man. He never recognized Abraham Mar as his son and would beat him frequently. She said her son has made mistakes, but he doesn’t deserve life in prison. Throughout the day, officers from several law enforcement agencies in Cameron County were present to support Diaz.
