It’s caused when blood flow to the heart is diminished over time because of accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries. Coronary artery disease often leads to heart attack. Local Dr. Robert Martinez explains some of the classic symptoms people experience when suffering from the effects of heart disease.
“Shortness of breath, Dismeonic Exersion which means shortness of breath while doing activity. Chest pain is the classic radiation into the left arm or left jaw. Palpitations, which include your heart racing. All of these things you might feel if your heart is struggling to receive blood flow from a blocked artery.”
And while these are textbook symptoms heart disease can sometimes be a silent killer. This is especially true of diabetics when damage to the arteries does not allow them to feel chest pain. Dr. Martinez stresses regular checkups and screenings.
“You wan t to get your blood pressure checked you want to get your cholesterol checked at least once a year and more if you are on medication. Diabetics should be screened at an early age”
And while screenings and medication serve as primary prevention you should also live a healthy lifestyle with a low fat low sugar diet, plenty of exercise and avoid smoking.
