The CDC says child obesity rates have tripled in the past three decades. In two-thousand-eight, nearly twenty percent of six to eleven year-olds were obese. That’s up from less than seven percent in 19-80.

Childhood obesity moves from not only being a health issue — but a political issue too.President Barack Obama is signing a memorandum creating a childhood obesity task force.

President says: “This has enormous promise in improving the health of our children, in giving support to parents to make the kind of healthy choices that oftentimes are very difficult.”

The white house’s fight against childhood obesity is being spearheaded by first lady Michelle Obama. The goal of her “let’s move” campaign is to teach America’s children… And their parents… About better nutrition and exercise.

Mrs. Obama says: “we’re determined to finally take on one of the most serious threats to their future: the epidemic of childhood obesity in America today — an issue that’s of great concern to me not just as a first lady, but as a mom.”

The first lady’s campaign isn’t about eliminating bad foods entirely. Instead, it’s about learning to establish a healthy lifestyle. She says that starts at home.

Mrs. Obama says: “no matter how much they beg for pizza, fries and candy, ultimately, they are not, and should not, be the ones calling the shots at dinnertime. We’re in charge. We make these decisions.”

The campaign says six and a half million kids have limited access to affordable, healthy foods. The goal is to not only boost family health, but also spur local economies.
