A federal judge has rejected a request by Ex-Cameron County sheriff Conrado Cantu to overturn or correct his prison sentence of 26 years and two months.
Cantu has argued on more than one occasion that the U.S. attorney’s office did not keep its promise for a lower jail term and hoped to have the sentenced amended.
The former sheriff had initially expected to serve no more than eight years for the 2005 conviction on federal racketeering charges.
But the judge dismissed any claim because Cantu signed a written plea agreement waiving appeal and collateral attack of his conviction and sentence. Fifty-two year old Cantu is serving jail time in a federal prison in Alabama.
