Brownsville woman charged after shaking her stepchild

A Brownsville woman has been charged with second degree injury to a child after investigators say she shook her 5-month-old step-child until she was unconscious.

Police say Erica Janet Rocha was arrested and released on a $20,000 bond. Child protective services initiated an investigation after Rocha took the baby to the hospital new year’s day because it was alive but unresponsive.

Police say the child suffered from shaken baby syndrome and now has permanent eye damage. The baby is now in custody of her paternal grandmother.
