Investigators from the Cameron County Sheriffs Narcotics Department received an anonymous phone call about a large amount of late-night activity taking place at a residence located at
1185 Fruit Dale Drive. The owner allowed out officers to enter the residence and they began
to search. According to Chief, Gus Reyna, as soon as deputies walked inside the home they noticed a strong odor of marijuana. The smell got stronger when they walked into the garage, and when they opened the doors of this GMC SUV they found bundles and bundles of drugs. The marijuana was hidden under the car seats neatly packed overall, investigators confiscated 1,221 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about 300 thousand dollars. The owners of the home were arrested and have been identified as 45-year-old Filiberto Ortiz Rubio and his wife, 39-year- old Martha Gabriela Rubio, both from Brownsville. Chief Reyna says the couple has not been in serious trouble with the law before, but it is not rare for your average family to fall into the world of drug trafficking just to make some quick cash.
