marihuana this weekend at the Falfurrias checkpoint. The
drug bust, which is the biggest for the agency so far this
fiscal year, was conducted after a K-9 unit alerted the
agents of the location of the narcotics stored in boxes
inside a tractor trailer that attempted to make it’s way
passed the checkpoint. Border Partol Spokesperson, Lee Roy
Cabrera told Fox 2 News, it has been a record-breaking year
for the agency. The driver, a U.S. citizen was arrested and
remains in federal custody. According to agents, the drug
cartels are increasingly violent, but are also increasingly
clever about how they try to smuggle drugs across the
border. Drug sniffing dogs along with the latest technology
and increased manpower at the border and local checkpoints
are part of the department of homeland security’s efforts
to keep narcotics off the streets. The drugs seized this
weekend by the U.S. Border Patrol agents at the Falfurrias,
checkpoint were tagged with a street value of more than
$9.5 million.
