A border patrol agent in the mcallen station was awarded the highest honor an agent can receive for their acts of bravery.
This morning, agent Anthony Gutierrez was awarded the purple cross. Gutierrez was nominated for the award in recognition of his service on the night of Aug. 18, 2009.
While on foot patrol, Gutierrez came across illicit activity and was critically injured when he was struck by an ATV driven by 18-year- old, Orlando Lara, a suspected scout for drug smugglers. Gutierrez who temporarily lost his vision in one eye, recalled the moment after the collision.
Although his recovery continues, Gutierrez has been off the field but returned to work at the mcallen station.
Fewer than one hundred border patrol agents have received a purple cross since it was established in 2001.
