According to the study, published in the September issue of neurology, taking the drug could lead to bleeding in the brain and an increased risk of death if they suffer a hemorrhagic stroke.
Researchers looked into two hundred fifty-eight cases of brain hemorrhages; fifty-one of the patients were taking Warfarin at the time.
All participants were around sixty-nine years old and lived in or near Cincinnati.
The study found people on the drug had about twice as much bleeding as those not taking the drug.
In an emailed statement to Fox Barr pharmaceuticals, who manufactures Warfarin says it believes ongoing clinical study of Warfarin’s uses will help doctors prescribe the drug more effectively.
