Bipolar disorder may last a lifetime

Children diagnosed with bipolar disorder may see still be suffering later in life.
Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis found forty-four percent of kids who had episodes of mania and depression also had them as adults.
One hundred and eight children participated in the eight-year study.
By its end, nearly half continued to have similar episodes — and, another thirty-five percent had substance abuse problems.
The researchers hope their findings will lead to better treatment for bipolar patients. The study appears in the October issue of “archives of general psychiatry.”
