Many older people dismiss leg aches and pains as a normal sign of aging. General muscle aches that go away when resting are usually accepted without question but PVD is a very real problem.

PVD is the insufficiency or lack of capacity to give blood to the limbs in our body.

The prevalence of PVD usually begins at around age 50 and increases with age.

The gradual build up of fatty material in the arteries is to blame however genetics and other factors play roles as well.

When you have symptoms of PVD in a leg or foot or arm or hand such as pain or discomfort during physical activity, loss of hair on the limbs, cramps or decreased pulse seek an evaluation from a specialist in PVD .

Treatment for patients with peripheral vascular disease include lifestyle changes and possibly medication, therapy or surgery and specialized care for vascular ulcers or open wounds. For more information call Dr. Mego at 618-2999.
