The only suspect in a deadly deliberately-set house fire in Weslaco last fall has been let out of jail because of a lack of evidence.

Thirty-year-old Mario Salinas junior of Mercedes had been arrested a month after the fire, and charged with arson and 2 counts of capital murder. The blaze trapped and killed 46-year-old Melba Martinez and her 12-year-old son.

At the time, authorities claimed Salinas torched the home in a vengeful rage over the break-up with Martinez’ daughter.

But the investigation never provided evidence that could verify that claim.
