Children who take Antipsychotics are more likely to pack on the pounds. A new study out of north-shore long island Jewish health system say many pediatric and adolescent patients who received second-generation Antipsychotic medications experience significant weight gain. It also shows their cholesterol and Triglyceride levels increase too. Doctors followed nearly two hundred pediatric patients who started taking meds for problems like aggressive behaviors, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. Researchers say depending on which drug they took, weight on average increased anywhere from about ten to nineteen pounds. Often times, the kids increased their waist circumference, which is associated with metabolic syndrome. The study appears in Jama Journal of the American medical association.
