A new warning has been issued for women who take anti-depressants while pregnant. A new study shows women who take certain anti-depressant medicines in the first trimester may have a slightly higher risk of giving birth to babies with heart defects. The risks were seen in women taking s-s-r-i’ s called Sertraline and Citalopram. Doctors prescribe the brand names of these drugs: Zoloft, Lustral, and Celexa. Women who took more than one s-s-r-i in early pregnancy were four times as likely to have babies with heart defects. Still, the authors of the study say the risk is relatively low. But, they caution, discontinuing anti-depressants is also risky because a depression relapse could trigger self-destructive behaviors. The study is available in the online medical journal “b-m-j.”
