The Cameron County District Attorney’s office announced that the murder charges pending against Michael Shane Freeman were dropped because new evidence shows that he may not have committed the crime. Residents that live in the neighborhood where the murder took place are now worried. The alleged murderer of 55-year-old Pedro Ivan Santana of Harlingen is on the road to freedom.
DNA results do not match up with evidence obtained from the crime scene and as a result Michael Shane Freeman will be released from the Carrizales-Rucker detention center in Olmito, Texas. As you may recall, freeman was sent to north Texas state hospital in 2007 to be psychologically evaluated after the 404th judicial court determined that he was not competent enough to stand trial.
While he is in custody though he has to be sane in order to go to trial. That was part of the delay. He has to be sane or rational in order to participate in the procedure.”
New results show that Freeman might not be the only one who participated in the homicide, therefore the investigation has been re-opened and detectives will head back to crime scene.
“Time is really at our side with this case. We have no statutes of limitation on this case and so we are going to put a lot more work into it to determine who it is that is responsible for this crime.”
After being informed, residents that live on the 1600 block of Sam Houston where Santana was beat to death with a baseball bat are concerned about their safety.
“I hope that he does not kill anyone else. I am very worried.”
“I feel kind of scared because it could have been one of us. That same day that the incident happened he talked to my step dad. My step dad was trying to sell him watermelons.”
Even though freeman will soon be a free man he still faces the possibility of being brought back to justice if new evidence holds him responsible. If you have any information that can help the District Attorney
