Alleged killer: freed by mistake
This article was published 1 year 7 months 19 days ago which may make its actuality or accuracy no longer valid. Foxrio2.com is not responsible for any misunderstanding. The man accused of killing 17-year-old Nelly Casas from Pharr was thought to have been locked up in a Reynosa prison, but it was only recently that it was learned that prison officials had mistakenly released Jose Luis Cantu and he had been free most of that time.
The release took place despite an Interpol detainer seeking extradition back to the United States.
Cantu was arrested again in the small town of ciudad Mier—-just 250 miles of Reynosa—and extradited to the U.S. to face murder charges.
In today’s hearing, twenty-one year old Cantu faced a judge for the first time since being named the chief suspect for the 2006 slaying of his former girlfriend. Investigators believe that after an argument, Cantu used a cord to strangle the girl. Cantu had been in prison in Reynosa for an unrelated weapons charge.
Cantu remains tonight in the hidalgo county jail on a 2 million dollar bond and could face life in prison.
