Alex Del Barrio joined the FOX 2 News Team in April 2008 as the Lead Sports Anchor. Del Barrio is no stranger to the RGV’s airwaves as he has been the lead radio play-by-play announcer for the Edinburg Roadrunners (Central Baseball League), the University of Texas-Pan American Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs (NCAA), and currently is the radio voice of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (NBA Development League). In addition he has been the home radio voice for the Rio Grande Valley Dorados (AF2) and a fill in radio play-by-play voice and color commentator for the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (Central Hockey League) He also has worked as a television live reporter for high school football and as a color commentator on the Killer Bees Saturday Night telecasts.
Del Barrio is a born and raised Valley native. He attended Mission High school where he played basketball and served as Sports Editor of the Eagle Eye newspaper. His talents took him to Boston University where he enrolled in the College of Communication. At BU, Del Barrio engulfed himself into the collegiate and professional sports landscape. He covered Terrier hockey, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, and softball for WTBU, BU’s student radio station. Del Barrio also worked as “Rhett” Boston University’s Terrier mascot at events throughout the year. He also was able to realize his dream as a Red Sox fan of going to the World Series in 2004 where he watched game two at Fenway Park after camping outside of the historic ballpark for 27 hours to buy tickets to the game. In Boston he also witnessed two of the New England Patriot’s Super Bowl Championship parades, a Boston Celtics Eastern Conference Finals appearance and the first Red Sox championship in 86 years. He left the university early to pursue his career broadcasting professional baseball in the Rio Grande Valley. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Texas-Pan American.
Alex’s sports allegiance are to the Boston Red Sox, Houston Rockets, Houston Astros, New England Patriots, and Dallas Stars. Del Barrio also is a fan of Texas Longhorn Football, and of North Carolina Basketball. He also considers Dodgers announcer Vin Scully, former Rocket’s announcer Gene Peterson, NBC’s Bob Costas, TNT’s Marv Albert, and Fox’s Joe Buck as his broadcasting heroes.
