Science confirms what most moms already know, when a woman sees her baby smile, areas of her brain are activated stimulating happy feelings.
The new study out of Texas’ Baylor College of medicine followed new moms, as doctors documented the growth of the newborn.
Scientists focused on experiences new moms had growing up themselves, and the relationships they had with their parents. Then, researchers met with the moms and babies at six months old.
At that time, scientists videotaped and captured smiling, crying and neutral pictures of the babies.
At ten months, they asked the mothers to come back in for MRI scans. When moms were shown pictures of their baby’s smile, an extensive network of the brain was activated.
That same system was *not* activated when the child was sad or neutral. Findings appear in the July issue of “pediatrics.”
