Brownsville city officials took part of a 24-hour nationwide initiative to identify and count homeless people throughout the community to bring additional federal funds to the city.

The census was directed by the community development block program.

The city receives $4M federal for community development and support for low income families and hopes to be able to provide further assistance.

But not everyone is convinced of the available aid.

The 24-hour census may not be as accurate as the city would like it to be since the people are supposed to be part of the count tend to shy away from it.

The final number of the 24-hour census has not yet been made public.
