You heard the phrase “fiscal cliff” thousands of times in 20-12 — and now in early 20-13 — the word “deal” goes along with those words.
While some are touting it as a win — politically — for taxpayers — the reality may be a more mixed bag… Fox news chief congressional correspondent mike Emmanuel has more.
while the fiscal cliff deal was sold as providing tax relief for the middle class, the non-partisan tax policy center estimates 77% of American households will end up paying higher federal taxes. That’s because the 2% payroll tax holiday is not part of the package, and impacts almost every worker. Even before that revelation, the legislation was unpopular with house republicans, and the speaker and majority leader did not make the final pitch. That was left to house ways and means chairman.
Though many conservatives didn’t like this package because it includes $620 billion in new tax hikes – with only $15 billion in spending cuts, which comes out to about $1 in cuts for $41 in taxes. So the key to passing it was 172 of the 257 votes in favor were from house democrats delivered by whip Steny Hoyer.
Boehner voted for the package as did house budget chairman Paul Ryan. While cantor and republican whip Kevin McCarthy voted against it. With Boehner facing re-election tomorrow to be speaker, many frustrated conservatives are saying he did his job.
at the white house last Friday, fox news has confirmed Boehner told Reid to go “f—- himself” twice after Reid had accused Boehner of running the house like a dictatorship, and being more concerned about keeping his job than cutting a deal. Sources say that outburst will likely boost the speaker’s stock with conservatives. In Washington, mike Emanuel, Fox news.
