State Senator Mario Gallegos Jr., the first Hispanic State Senator to serve Harris County died yesterday at a Houston hospital.
Flags at the Capitol Building in Austin were flown at half-staff in honor of Gallegos. He was elected in 1995 as a state senator, and also served in the state house of representatives.
He also was a firefighter for many years. His father was the Brownsville Fire Chief in the 1970′s.
His spokesman said Gallegos died of complications from a 2007 liver transplant. He was 62 years old.
