In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, U.S. Senator John Cornyn asked if the weapon used to kill Zapata was from any potential “gun walking” programs in the state. He added that one of the weapons found at the murder scene was linked to a Texas-based straw purchaser.
Recent revealing reports indicated that the ATF not only allowed firearms to cross from Texas into Mexico, but also requested that gun store owners transfer weapons to suspected drug cartel agents.
Zapata, a Brownsville native, was killed February of 2011 in Mexico by believed members of the Zetas Cartel.
