A strong security detail closed off the perimeter of the federal courthouse in Brownsville as alleged members of the Gulf Cartel stood in court today.
Jury selection began in the case against Juan Roberto Rincon-Rincon. He faces two counts of conspiracy to traffic more than 5 kilos of cocaine, and over 1,000 kilos of marijuana between January 2002 and October 2011.
The other defendant, José Luis ”Comandante Wicho,” Zuniga-Hernandez was allegedly carrying about $20,000 in cash, cocaine, as well as a jewel-encrusted handgun.
Prosecutors in court documents suggest both men worked for the recently arrested Jorge “El Cos” Eduardo Costilla-Sanchez, and were attempting to escape Mexico amid power struggles within the cartel.
