RGV Army Pilot Falls in the Line of Service

Another valley soldier has lost his life in the line of duty.

Chief Warrant Officer José Luis Montenegro who was an Army Pilot was killed yesterday after the helicopter he was in crashed.

The Associated Press reports that the Taliban insurgents are claiming to have gunned down a helicopter in the same area where the crash happened, but this information is not yet confirmed and the incident remains under investigation.

The 32-year-old Brownsville native graduated high school in 1999 in the Clear Lake area near Houston.

He was the only son of San Juan Resident Reyna Torres who was grief stricken and declined to comment on his death.

According to Emilio de Los Santos Director for Hidalgo County’s Veterans Services, Montenegro joined the Army right after high school and this was his third deployment.

José Luis Montenegro is the 39th valley soldier to lose his life in the war his body is set to return to the valley in the next 7 to 10 days.
