Investigative Report: Senior Citizens Involved in Car Accidents

This vehicle accidentally driven into a yogurt shop in mission…and earlier this week an Oldsmobile into a tree..both involving elderly drivers…so how old is too old to be behind the wheel…
According to the Texas department of transportation there were over 600,000 accidents in the state last year. 45734 included drivers 65 and older. That’s 7 percent but 693 of them involved drivers 99 and over out of that and out of the 85 and older group, that’s 18 percent. And that’s where the state of texas draws the line in regards to drivers license issuing…
And that comes from Katies law, a law named after Katie Bolka, who passed away in Dallas back in 2006 after being struck by a 90 year old woman running a red light
The law makes those over 85 take the state driving test every two years
And when it comes to insurance rates, , completion of driver improvement courses may help keep those low for any age

And for drivers getting up in age and their family members some signs to look out for ..
But lets keep things in perspective…the previous numbers mentioned above still pale in comparison to
drivers in the 16 to 21 age who make up nearly a quarter of accidents in Texas
And with drivers at both ends of the spectrum, the younger set plagued by accidents involving text messaging and overall cell phone use, and those on the other end, dealing with a decline in reaction time and awareness, the best method of driving is cautious and defensive.
