Space exploration is entering a new era. And Cameron County is hoping to be at the forefront of these out-of-this world expeditions… But the countdown to takeoff isn’t without it’s challenges.
Brownsville is closer to becoming a star in the Rio Grande valley– and even the state of Texas. Space exploration technologies (Space X) has their eye on the area as a possible launch site.
The area under consideration is about five miles south of Port Isabel and south padre island. All launches would be east over the gulf of Mexico.
But also in the running is Florida and Puerto Rico.
That isn’t the only obstacle. Critics argue the launch site will come at the expense of the area’s natural habitat.
But Gilbert argues that they are on the same side as the environment… Even going as far as saying it would actually bolster the terrain, by protecting it.
Gilbert says they are in the middle of a federal environmental impact study, and hope the findings will back their claims…
The next hurdle for Cameron county is a public hearing in January. And they are asking community to come out and voice their support.
Aside from being a member among an elite group of cities that give an intimate, and informative, glimpse into extraordinary phenomena… Space x would also give a major economic boost to Cameron county, creating hundreds of jobs– and brining millions in revenue
