The U.S. District Court in Washington wrote an opinion, saying state prosecutors failed to prove that lawmakers created the new maps without discriminatory purposes. Texas’ lawyers argued that the legislature crafted the map to benefit the GOP, and to discriminate against minorities.
State Attorney General Greg Abbott released a statement saying they, “will continue defending the maps enacted by the Texas legislature and will immediately take steps to appeal this flawed decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Today’s decision will most likely affect the next cycle of elections in 2014.
