On February 27, 2011, the night before Guillermo and Yadira’s Wedding, Elias Vasquez crashed into them head on, causing Guillermo’s death, who was only 18 at the time.
“We had our minds on our wedding, the next day, we never thought a drunk driver would come and change our lives,” said Yadira Pina, Guillermo’s Fiancé.
Dileny Olivares, the Victim’s Sisters, said “Well, this hurts all of us….and there are no words, no words.”
Vazquez, the defendant, asked for some free time to spend with family before receiving a formal sentence.
“It’s not fair he gets his way, he was drunk, my brother was fine,” said Dileny Olivares.
The defense team requested probation for a few days to present the final arguments.
“He wants a 10 year sentence, but the state cannot allow that. The family will only take a minimum of 12 years,” said Linda Gonzalez, Starr County District Attorney Assistant.
The organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Guillermo’s friends share the same advice.
“The message today is the same as always, if you drink, don’t drive,” said Ana Verley, MADD Representative.
The final sentencing in the case against Elias Vasquez will be November 27th, where he may face up to 12 years in prison.
