Starting tonight at midnight, Rio Grande City will increase in size promising economic growth. Meanwhile, the police department is ready to also increase their patrolling. This annexation is a monumental step for Rio Grande City.

It’s the first time the city expands since its beginnings in the early 1800′s.

It’s a project that has been in the planning for the past four years. The expansion is of 1000 acres. Almost 3 miles to the east, and another 3 miles to the west. Mayor Villarreal says the the infrastructure for the most part is place to serve the approximately 3,000 new residents.

In total there will be 30 new streets as part of Rio Grande City. Sergeant Rodolfo Hinojosa says the police department is ready to increase the number of officers patrolling the new routes.

A big step that probably that will probably happen again in Rio Grande City.

Mayor Villarreal tell us that this will probably also lower home insurance rates for new residents, because now they will be part of the city and county with new services such as a fire and police department.
