Today the construction began for the new Outpatient Veterans Affairs Clinic here in McAllen, and will be able to serve double the amount of patients that the current one.

This is how it all begins. The contraction of the new VA Outpatient Clinic on North McColl and Hackberry. The new clinic will be 58,000 square feet, almost double in size than the current one.

The new facility will provide extended primary care services and some outpatient specialty care including primary care, physical therapy and pediatrics among others. After several years of fighting for this, and approximately $20-million later, for some veterans this is a dream come true.

Congressman Ruben Hinojosa says this is just one step towards a greater goal. Creating a hospital here in the valley.

McAllen Commissioner Jim Darling was also present at the event as well as Robert M. Walton, director of the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System.

Construction is expected to finalize at the end of the summer of 2013, exactly in one year.
