In Cameron County, a public hearing began a few hours ago in regards to the construction of a second causeway between South Padre Island and Port Isabel.

The open house began at 5:30 pm and is still in session at the South Padre Island Convention Center. More than 1,000 people showed up, which is considered a pretty good turnout.

Out of the five suggested routes, it appears route number three is most favorable so far.

Route number three will begin around Beach Access 5 and 6, which is north of the island, and end up bay side by Highway 510 and FM 106.

Authorities say the construction of this project is expected to be 8 miles long and cost about 5oo-million dollars.

Officials say they are still receiving written comments and all reviews will be considered.

The final details are expected to be announced late August.
