9 Immigrants Died in Palmview Rollover Accident

The Mexican Consulate in McAllen is working to identify and notify family members of the three passengers who died in a rollover of a minivan being used to smuggle them north. A total of 19 people, most from Oaxaca, were crammed into the vehicle late Tuesday night when the accident occurred. Fox 2 News Reporter Antonio Rodriguez has more.

A Dodge Astrovan carrying 19 Mexican Nationals, all believed to be in the U.S. illegally rolled over last night on Expressway 83 in Palmview. Nine people killed and six were injured.

It was a bloody scene. Backpacks, water bottles and nine covered bodies lay scattered within 30 yards from the van.

Authorities say, the accident happened blocks after Border Patrol conducted a traffic stop. The driver stopped for brief moment and then sped off in a failed attempt to get away with his human cargo.

The van, which was designed to carry the driver and up to seven passengers, had been gutted to squeeze in a total of 19 people. Last night the van was demolished.

These are the tragic consequences of illegal immigration. The driver of the vehicle was apprehended and could face negligent homicide charges for the fatal wreckage. Three other suspects managed to flee the tragic scene. The six people injured remain in the hospital tonight. The names of the deceased have not been released yet. This case remains under investigation.
