In the lower valley, the construction of a new railway bridge is key to the development and growth of the Port of Brownsville. It will be the only international bridge built in the last 100 years. Steel is one of the materials most in demand in the region. The materials arrive by sea to the Port of Brownsville to be stored and distributed by land through cargo to various places mostly in Mexico. In 2011, this activity of exporting steel positively impacted the economic growth of the Port of Brownsville. A million dollar contract with a company dedicated to the handling of liquid and gas promises to generate just over 500 jobs to the Rio Grande Valley.
