A Canadian couple counts their blessings after armed men just miles south of Matamoros assaulted them. A retired Ontario couple who spent time traveling through inner Mexico, including Guadalajara, claims they were ambushed Thursday as they approached Brownsville on the other side of the border. 62-year-old jack Appleton slammed on the brakes and reversed his Winnebago to avoid possibly getting shot. He sped off to a nearby gas station while his wife, 66-year-old Eileen, snapped photos from the passenger side. Both have 26 years of law enforcement training. At an Oxxo gas station, the s-u-v parked next to the Appleton’s motor home, and within seconds two more vehicles with armed men arrived. The gunmen were adamant about taking Eileen’s camera away, but she would not budge until one of the guys tore her blouse, took her camera and left.

During the struggle, the Appleton’s terrier, Nigel, barked continuously at the bad guys. What surprises the Appleton is they assure no one called police during the attack. Despite the scare the couple plans to visit Mexico again. The Appleton will stay in Texas for a week and then head home to Ontario. Authorities recommend if you have to visit Mexico to go in a group to reduce your chances of being targeted by criminal organizations.
